The first manned balloon flight in Italy rose over Milan in 1784, a year after the Montgolfier brothers lifted a sheep, a duck and a rooster above Versailles. Chianti waited two centuries for its own fleet.
Commercial ballooning arrived in the valley in the 1990s, when operators discovered that the basin between Florence and Siena produces some of the calmest dawn air in Europe.
The geography explains it. The Chianti hills rise in long parallel ridges of sandstone and galestro shale, trapping cool night air in the valley floors. At sunrise that air sits still. Niccolò Machiavelli wrote The Prince here in 1513, exiled to a farmhouse at Sant'Andrea in Percussina, and the vineyards he described in letters to Francesco Vettori still cover the same hillsides. Launch fields shift daily with the wind, but the drift usually carries baskets over Sangiovese rows, stone pievi and the Pesa river valley.
The craft itself is unchanged in principle. An envelope of ripstop nylon holds roughly 3,000 cubic metres of air; propane burners raise its temperature about 100°C above ambient; the balloon climbs and sinks while the wind supplies all lateral movement. Pilots steer only by finding different wind directions at different altitudes. Chianti balloon flights typically cruise between 300 and 1,000 metres, low enough to hear tractors and church bells.
